Ice Climber Dies in Avalanche
An ice climber was killed and his partner injured Sunday when an avalanche swept them off the wall of a Mount Washington ravine and they fell 2,000 feet, the authorities said. Thomas Smith, 41 years old, of Montpelier, Vt., was pronounced dead at Androscoggin Hospital in Berlin, Jean McAlister of the Appalachian Mountain Club said.
